Constant Access to Water & Hay
Please refer to my article, Preparation for Shipment of Equine, for information on how to prepare your horse for transport.
Once on the van and along the way, we will constantly maintain clean water changes throughout the trip. These water changes occur about every 2 ½ to 4 hours. We dump, rinse and refill all horses' water so that they always have fresh water.
Hay is provided constantly also. Canvas hay bags are used for safety and reliability. Hay nets are potentially dangerous because they are edible and can be pulled down too low or completely under the horse creating a hazardous condition.
The best kind of hay for each horse is the kind he/she is used to eating. Please send familiar hay with your horse. Horses will generally consume ½ to 1 bale per day depending on bale size and horse size.
Grain is almost never fed during transport for obvious reasons. However, in some cases it is necessary - for example, a horse with few or no teeth or an allergy to hay. In these cases a low-protein pellet can be fed instead of hay. Please supply the feed and instruct us on feeding in these situations.
We would be glad to discuss this subject in more detail or answer any questions you might have. Please call us at 800-962-2730.
